What is skin needling?
At Bayside Family Medical & Musculoskeletal Practice in Glenelg we offer skin needling treatments to help acne scarring, surgical scars, wrinkles, skin tightness and texture. We pride ourselves on using innovative technology which is why we us the Dermapen. Skin needling is a procedure that involves puncturing the skin multiple times with small needles attached to a cylindrical roller to induce collagen growth and improve your skin’s look and feel.
What is the process for skin needling?
Our treatments begin with the application of local anaesthetic cream to the treated area before local anaesthetic injections are administered to numb the treated areas. After these local anaesthetic injections are given, there should be no sensation from the actual skin needling.
We then use a skin roller over the skin multiple times to induce thousands of microscopic injuries to the skin. This is the longest part of the procedure, which can take up to two hours to complete a full face. These microscopic injuries induce your body to begin healing, when it begins to heal, you may notice visible changes in your skin. Soon after your treatment collagen production should start and within 4 weeks you should notice a visible difference.
Benefits of skin needling
If you are unhappy with the look and feel of your skin, then skin needling treatments may be the solution for you. Skin needling can help rejuvenate and replenish your skin with its unique and innovative process. Some of the benefits of skin needling include:
- Reduced wrinkles, lines and folds
- Firmer, tighter skin
- Improved skin texture
- Reduced pore size
- Diminished acne or chicken pox scars
- Lessened pigmentation marks and brighter skin tone
- Improved appearance of stretch marks and cellulite
The Dermapen, an innovative skin needling technology
The Dermapen fractional micro delivery technology provides fractional delivery of needles and micro injuries into the epidermis and dermis. These micro injuries then encourage your body to re-grow and repair the skin through the normal physiology of skin. The Dermapen is often compared to Fraxel Lasers, however the advantage of using the Dermapen technology is that while lasers create small pits that vary in diameter and depth the Dermapen produces consistent holes in the skin. This makes the Dermapen advantageous in that it creates consistency and does not require light therapy (which often carries higher risk).
Is it safe?
Skin needling is often viewed as a safer alternative to using a laser and is encouraged for those with darker skin tones. Skin needling is designed to naturally cause the release of key growth factors that promote healing and trigger collagen synthesis which can create naturally induced collagen in your treated areas.
