What is Platelet therapy?
At Bayside Family Medical & Musculoskeletal Practice in Glenelg, we provide Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PrP) Therapy, which smooths, tightens and improves texture and tone of your skin without the need for invasive surgery. PRP therapy, also known as Stem Cell Regeneration, gradually increases the production of collagen, thereby plumping out the skin for a fresher and healthier appearance. This non-invasive, simple procedure is an alternative to laser and chemical peel treatments and is a safe and effective method used to treat:
• Sun-damaged and prematurely aged skin
• The appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and fading of dark circles.
• Sagging skin on the neck and face
• Back of the hands
The application of PRP therapy has been used to heal the body in various medical disciplines such as dentistry, sports medicine, wound healing, neurosurgery, dentistry, and ophthalmology as well as plastic, cosmetic, maxillofacial and cardiothoracic surgery.
The science behind PRP Therapy
Platelets are the key ingredient to replenish and rejuvenate your skin due to their repairing nature. Our blood consists of red (93%) and white bloods cells (1%) and platelets (6%) which are all suspended in plasma.
Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) involves reducing the RBC (since they are less useful in the healing process) and increasing the platelet count. Ultimately, when applied to the dermis, this super rich platelet plasma promotes healing and rejuvenation, whilst accelerating collagen production for a healthy and youthful appearance.
For the purpose of PRP therapy to improve facial appearance, we have discussed the procedure below.
The process of platelet extraction for facial rejuvenation
Blood is collected in the same way as when you have a simple blood test. This allows us to extract the stem cells from your platelets that promote healing and rejuvenation. The blood is centrifuged for about 5-10 minutes which separates the blood into plasma, red and white blood cells and platelets.
After the extraction process, we then activate the platelets with calcium chloride. The calcium chloride promotes further growth which, when combined with your platelets, stimulates the proliferation of small molecules that act as messengers to initiate the process of skin regeneration. These molecules include fibroblasts, osteoblasts and endothelial cells which produce new stem cells that promote healthy facial tissue.
Since your own blood is used this is a very safe method that reduces the risk of rejection, or allergic reactions. While some patients experience some minor discomfort, the procedure is relatively pain free. Local anaesthesia is provided when the Platelet Rich Plasma is injected into the appropriate areas.
Your PRP therapy treatment plan
During your consultation here at Bayside Family Medical & Musculoskeletal Practice, we will provide an assessment of your needs and desires as well as the condition of your skin to determine the most effective treatment plan. This plan will include the amount of treatments required to achieve optimal results. Generally, results are significantly noticeable after 3-4 treatments, and usually last anywhere between 18 months to 2 years.
